On July 24th, the NBA announced new media deals worth over $76 billion with NBC, Amazon, and Disney, set to go into effect following the 2024-2025 season. For several months, rumors of multiple expansion franchises have circulated, with Seattle and Las Vegas frequently mentioned as prime destinations. With the NBA fanbase rapidly expanding, speculation about league expansion, both within and outside of North America, grows louder daily.

As basketball’s popularity continues to surge globally, the talent pool from around the world is multiplying. Foreign superstars such as Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Luka Dončić have become household names, significantly contributing to the game’s growth in Europe. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver may soon capitalize on this momentum by expanding the league’s presence overseas.

Recent discussions between the NBA and FIBA have hinted at the possibility of a European NBA-adjacent league. While the EuroLeague currently dominates the basketball market in Europe, the NBA is working with financial firm, The Raine Group, to assess expansion possibilities on the continent. Although several European basketball clubs earn less than their NBA and soccer counterparts, the promise of a more secure economic structure and larger media rights deals may entice these organizations to join the NBA’s new league.

With an established basketball fanbase in Europe and the financial backing and growth potential provided by the NBA, this collaboration could bridge the gap between American grassroots and European basketball. Furthermore, it would offer additional opportunities for growth within the sport as basketball continues to expand beyond borders.
